Markt Feucht

Town Hall

Konrad Wurffbein, owner of the tavern „Schwarzer Adler“, had the house built in 1640.  After it had been burnt down during the Thirty Years’ War, a new house was constructed. Therefore, the dates 1640 and 1652 are shown on the façade of today’s building at Hauptstraße 33 (former Hauptstraße Nr. 43). As the postal network in Germany experienced a period of enormous growth during the 17th century, a post office was established in Feucht in Konrad Wurffbein’s house in 1685. During the two following centuries, the property changed hands repeatedly.

On December 1, 1871 the railroad line to Regensburg was opened. When the nearby town of  Altdorf was connected to the railroad network in 1878, the post office in Feucht was no longer needed and closed On April 12, 1879 the administration of Feucht bought the building with a courtyard of 0,06 “Tagwerk” (approximately acre) for the amount of 10,594 Mark and 30 Pfennig. It became town hall and school house.

In 1907 the rear building was broken down and replaced by an electric power plant. At its beginning the plant delivered power for the lighting of 60 houses and the railroad station. The front building continued to house the local school and the fire brigade for the following decades. The construction was renovated again in 1937 and some administrative offices were moved to the second floor. Further reconstruction was done 1940/1941 so that a “Viehwaage” (public scale for live stocks), a “Freibank” (department selling inexpensive meat, mostly from emergency slaughter), cold storage and a police station with a bullpen could be placed there along with some of the administrative offices. The second floor consisted now of two apartments and more office space. During World War II the house was destroyed by air raids on August 10 and August 11, 1943.  With the reconstruction in 1949/1950 the original gabled roof was replaced by a hipped roof. The main building housed now the administration of Feucht. A former apartment in the rear part was transformed into additional office space and a filing department in 1978.

Comprehensive renovation in 2001 led to the current structure. The occasion was used to roof the courtyard. The clock from the town hall tower, dated from the 1920s, is located there now.
